While ink is a liquid mostly composed of pigments or dyes, toner is a powdered substance containing a carbon-based formulation. Toners are the primary media used in laser printers to form images and text on paper.

The earliest forms of toner simply contained carbon powder. However, the demand for higher-quality printing resulted in the development of a more refined toner formulation made from mixtures of carbon with specialized polymers. Like ink, toners are available in a variety of colors, including monochrome and CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) colors. Modern laser printers are often equipped with toner cartridges for convenience.
