GDPR, the new modern benchmark for privacy.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), coming into effect on May 25, 2018, was issued by the European Union (EU) as a compliance mandate to protect privacy rights of EU citizens and residents. GDPR applies not only to EU companies but to all companies worldwide that process personal data for EU citizens and residents. GDPR is a global law.

GDPR is expanding what is private data and the impacts on this. The key point to understand with any privacy regime is its focus on the protection and use of the privacy attributes or what's called personal identifiable information (PII) associated with an individual.

Data has rules, in this case the rule is GDPR, when you move the data the rules move with it. When you move data from one country to another you might move it to a country that doesn't have adequate protections and the recipient of the data is equally negligent under the law. The act of moving the data across transnational boundaries may violate the law.

Under GDPR, organizations can be fined all the way up to 4% of their annual global revenue, or €20 Million, whichever is greater.
